I've been playing Airline Empires for a couple of days and have more or less got the hang of it.  One thing I don't fully understand, is how hubs work.   What benefits does paying huge startup costs and double fees for gates give you?

A hub allows you, in essence, to having connecting traffic between your flights.

So just a simple example, you have a hub in Madrid Barajas, and you fly Paris-Madrid with 100 paying passengers then you offer Madrid-Mexico City. Some of the inbound Paris-Madrid flight passengers may connect to your Madrid-Mexico City flight, due to having a hub.

Most carriers, like Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Delta, United, etc.. all have a hub/hubs that their main goal is to have you fly with them, from your departure point to your arrival via their hub network.

In game terms, it also increases your maximum gate lease.

Without a hub, you can only lease 10 gates at the airport.

With a hub, you're allowed up to 25.

In either case, if you want to control more gates you have to build a terminal.
