If American didn't need government help and is doing so well, why is their parent company bankrupt?if the United States stopped funding which they should the only carriers that would still be here are American, Alaska, and Continental (as far as legacy). Jetblue, Southwest, America West and Spirit (as far as LCC). As far as I'm concerned AA/CO are the only two who have not needed the Govt help.
...Stop funding US Airlines and let one crash into the ocean

They applied for bankruptcy because the unions were being absolutely impossible in negotiating a lower employment cost.
It's really me, now. #backtoAE

I can understand where you are comming from, but if the gov. stopped funding the airlines, its likely that a few would go down. Now I am particuarly concerned about NWA. Remember, I am from the DTW area, and NW flies about +68% of flights. If they went away, there is no other airline to pick up the slack, and DTW is a major airport. No NW would leave DTW a wasteland.
DTW and Detroit is already a wasteland. They wont be missed.

I believe American Airlines is the national carrier which as to why it gets what it wants without Govt hesitation...no?
NO!! Nobody gets what they want. And We don't have a National carrier. Or subsidize manufacturers like Airbus. its All private businesses. Only Socialized countries nationalize businesses. All the US governments at all levels . Are selling anything they got as fast as they can. You are failing to see the strategic cause of the poor economies. Which is near worthless currency. And spending of it. By governments And the resultant inflation . And lost jobs. The faster the governments came off the gold standard. So they could lower the value of the currencies, unchecked. The worse the countries economies are.

DTW has potential to become a huge hup/aerotropolis... so I would miss it..
What potential are you seeing. Taxes are too high. Which is why Detriot closed down in the first place. And politics are too corupt. Which is keeping taxes too high And handouts high. And the people are too poor and thievery is out of hand. And all the smart business people went to other parts of the country to set up shop. There are no jobs. The city. Is in fact bulldozing whole blocks of housing .So they can abandon the cost to maintain infrastructure. And they shut off the power and shut down the gas lines. And close the roads. To reduce their cost. They sell houses for a dollar. And nobody buys them. Businesses went Where taxes are low. And politicians have not taken over businesses yet. With their hands held out. And crime hasn't chased them away.
I'm not sure where you are located. Pal. But I'm in rustbelt Cleveland. Which is a stones throw from Detroit. And Detroit is to be avoided at all cost.
All big cities are money pit , business failures here. Miami, New York, LA, Detroit . Could fall in the Ocean. And we would be better off for it.

Only 7th in world well done guys!United States: 4.9% (2005)
United Kingdom: 4.7% (2005 est.)
Ireland: 4.2% (2005 est.)
This proves that high taxes stifle the economy. An economy functions best with lower taxes. America is blamed so much for this global warming. Take a look at the 2000 U.N. data on the Carbon Emissions PER CAPITA (the important number):
7 United States of America 20.6
as you can see, the U.S. does not deserve all the blame we get about emissions. We actually rank a distant 7th. So, I am sorry, but the CO2/SUV argument holds no water with me.
Ireland, a low tax economy in 2006 with higher than US employment was fukt because of inadequate taxes. Just putting that out there...
Just thought I'd leave that there.if the United States stopped funding which they should the only carriers that would still be here are ... and Continental , ..., America West
