It depends in which country your plaining. It's a good strategy for Japan (for example), but it won't work for Ukraine where straight away you should go for internation routes.

Of course you should think about whether the domestic market is usable or not. I've had a couple of Ukranian airlines myself and have to say that I started them with domestic routes. There's enough demand to have a (not too big, obviously) decent network.

With hub in Kyiv Boryspil (KBP), right?

Domestic routes pay off a lot more than international routes - i.e. prices are relatively higher

In fact I had hubs in KBP, IEV, SIP, ODS, DOK, LWO and DNK. I had all of them connected with each other (mostly with Q400s) and connected them to every international destination I had.

I agree. In countries like Ukraine, where there is no or very little competition, the domestic market is a great base.

Spain can get tricky due to competition, though you do have 2 of the biggest airports in the world to base in. Then, these come with their own competition.

Spain is not that tough...  Check out my airline in R1 (Random Air).

I thought the original thread was supposed to be discussing difficulty per se, not factoring in competition? Or else the United States would be one of the hardest countries to operate out of in multiple worlds...

The original thread had nothing to do with competition, it was a legitimately difficult market until it was derailed by post spammers.

I have tried a lot and Pakistan seemed hard: KHI the largest airport in pak and the largest demand i have ever seen is to Dubai (Y: 600 pax). As long as i use large aircrafts and fly to cheap airports into east asia i am fine. Rank 29. Guys with small demand, try a big aircraft on long range routes and always make a hub.

Well, I think that every country has it's own pros and cons; for example, once I tried to operate from Barbados, a very smal island on the Caribbean; the island has 2 or 3 airports, and the biggest has a annual passenger of 2M-3M, that is ok; but the only way to make a high profit was to make larger and international flights; although with smaller routes across the Caribbean, you can make a small but eficient profit. The only disadvantage, was when all the gates on other countries, especially on the Caribbean, were occupied by other airline, thus reducing the amount of posible destinations.

However, another problem occurs when in a country there is a very high competition; in my case, the newest airline that i own: Cia. Aeronáutica Mexicana, is operating in Mexico, but there is other 3 airline that are trying to compete against; the problem comes when, out of blue, try to over saturate some flights, increasing the daily frecuencies and, downing the prices: obviusly they cannot make a decent profit because of the costs and the number of passengers, and with them, all my profits diminishes, making an lose-lose thing.

Hard to operate in China or Russia? lol, wut?

What's wrong with Ukraine that there are so many posts about it? I don't see how would it be harder then in smaller non-EU neighbors like Belarus or Georgia.

So I would make two big divisions:

Hardest to have decent growth:

- smaller or more troubled African countries (i.e. about more than half of continent), what kind of passenger load could you expect from Eritrea, Gambia, Swaziland, Central African Republic, or Somalia? A lot of neighboring countries and airports but all with same problems and small loads, you can barely fill a few 737s at best.

- anything in the Pacific, not only small load but also distance

- small countries surrounded by big competitive neighbors in Asia, Europe and the Caribbean (like Laos, Bhutan, Montenegro, Grenada)

Hardest competition (dependent on other players in a particular world):

all big markets, but usually 1/10 of all airlines are in USA so that says enough, but sometimes you'll also get a lot of competition in EU (especially big members like Germany, UK, France, Spain), Japan, China, Russia, Australia, Turkey, sometimes Brazil, India, Indonesia, also in Singapore or Persian Gulf when sometimes you have 5 airlines who all want to connect every town on Earth with their hub; but there are a lot of opportunities and it basically depends on your abilities and time, and sometimes you can get more or less lucky about how numerous, capable and/or stubborn your domestic opponents will be.

+1

China is actually remarkably easy, since there are far less competitors per overall demand compared to any of the other, I'd say, top 25 countries ranked by demand.

Speaking of the OP operating in Greenland and small airports like that, if you take out a couple of loans and use some leased aircraft with range that reaches a good amount of routes, you can have them be profitable. I got a Greenlandic airline doing well: http://ae31.airline-...3ra&player=1961

How do you fly that far with A320s!

Georgia can be used by making a hub in Tbilisi. Do that and you're basically sorted for the rest of the game.

The A320s aren't actually that far, since Greenland is so far north that basically anywhere on earth above 55 degrees latitude north can be reached from it.
