No, the R stands for Regional. A350-900R is basically a toned-down version of the A350-900 optimized for shorter distance.

Regional/Short Haul: A320

Medium: A320/A321

Long: A330/A350.

 

That way, I can have a fleet of sophisticated airliners and on the same time worry much less about maintenance, since I only have 3 families to worry about.
