Pacific Northwest Airlines (Cat. 1) PN/PNW/PACIFIC NORTHWEST/KPDX/2023

Pacific Northwest Airlines was founded in Portland in 1971, flying an initial network that connected Portland PDX, Seattle SEA, and San Francisco SFO together. These three cities currently make up PNW's three primary hubs. Business statistics database Sirion reports that, in 2022, SEA was the largest; SFO came second; and PDX came third, despite PDX being their main hub (with PNW holding a 63% market share).

In 1980, PNW established a wholly-owned subsidiary called Rainier Airways, which operated regional airliners for PNW. Over the years, this has included the Embraer ERJ, EMB-120, and E175, as well as the DeHavilland Canada DHC-8-300 and -400.

PNW flew their inaugural flight on 22 May, 1971, as Pacific Northwest flight 102, on a Douglas DC-9-32. The plane flew a route from PDX-SEA-SFO-PDX on that day. PNW continued to expand in a relatively rapid fashion throughout the '70s and '80s, although expansion was greatly hindered by gasoline shortages as a result of the Gulf War. By 1985, PNW was the tenth largest airline in the United States.

Expansion of PNW slowed into the '90s, and expansion slowed even further after the September 11th attacks on America and the subsequent crash in air travel demand. This crash in air travel demand marked the first and only time that PNW had to apply for bankruptcy protection. Fortunately, PNW managed to find several new shareholders, and they managed to stay aloft.

In 2010, PNW launched a seaplane subsidiary known as Puget Sound Airlines in Seattle. Puget Sound flies DHC-6s and DHC-8s to areas around the Puget Sound, including Seattle, Friday Harbor, Victoria, Vancouver, and other locations as well. This coincided with PNW launching a vacations program, where they offered bundled vacation deals - transportation and lodging - in exchange for cheaper fares for those who selected these packages. This led to PNW establishing a partnership with Milner Hotels, and also a codeshare with Japan Pacific Airlines.

The 2010s were an era that PNW was again able to prosper within, and they became America's fifth largest airline by 2019. During the 2010s, PNW opened tertiary hubs in Denver, Sacramento, Spokane, Santa Ana, San Jose, Eugene, Medford, Redmond, and Salem. This complimented the addition of Spokane and Minneapolis as secondary hubs. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and PNW was forced to furlough hundreds of employees and cancel as many flights.

In the post-pandemic era, PNW has rebuilt from what they lost during the pandemic and is eyeing addition expansion. Additionally, they have launched a climate initiative program, with the ambitious goal of being zero-emissions by 2040. As a part of this program, PNW became the first airline in the world to eliminate single-use disposable plastic from their operations, opting for biodegradable alternatives.
