Still having fuel cost issues on certain routes

Posted by berubium on 19 October 2010 - 07:07 AM

Hello.

I recall a thread on this a couple of months ago, but I can't seem to find it now. I have had issues with a few different sims (I recall it happening on AE4, AE6, & AE8 and it's now happening to me on AE12) using small jet aircraft (Bombardier CRJ series & Embraer ERJ series) on certain routes.

For instance, I am flying a small fleet of Bombardier CRJ-100 planes on a new airline I've started up. I have a multitude of flights originating from YVR in the 300-800ish miles range & they are all showing some normal fuel usage numbers so far. A few examples noted below:

YVR-YQR: 828 miles, 14x weekly, $7140 daily fuel cost
YVR-YXE: 749 miles, 14x weekly, $6468 daily fuel cost
YVR-JNU: 783 miles, 14x weekly, $6690 daily fuel cost
YVR-YXS: 327 miles, 14x weekly, $4144 daily fuel cost

No problems with any of these. I am able to secure a respectable profit with these flights. But some flights just don't seem to work. An example:

YVR-YWG: 1158 miles, 14x weekly, $46032 daily fuel cost

This is my only current example as I have just started this airline. Back when I was operating Air Azur in the AE4 sim, I'd estimate that over 1/4 of new flights using Bombardier aircraft had this glitch. Several flights from Nice to Greece were affected. Nice to Algiers was another really bad one & strangely Marseille to Nice worked okay & the distances were almost identical! Is it possible somehow to anticipate fuel costs to avoid creating a route like this that is doomed to failure? I'd appreciate any information on this glitch. Thanks!

Does the affected aircraft have IFE installed?

In the current game (AE12, the example with flights originating from YVR), none of my aircraft have IFE installed. In my Mediterranean example from AE2 (I mistakenly said AE4 in the original post), the aircraft did have IFE installed (I think it was simply audio on demand), but this problem would occur using the exact same plane. I'd try a particular plane on Nice-Algiers, get an astronomical fuel amount, & then cancel the flights & use the same plane with Marseille-Algiers & get normal fuel amounts.

Do the IFE costs per flight factor into the fuel costs, or do they show up somewhere else?

I'm having the same thing in routes from the 400-700 mile range mostly. The small jets are almost 100% fuel costs in terms of revenue. Yet, switching to a Q400 for example has far lower fuel costs and yet it still will not turn a profit, on routes where the capacity matches demand and without competition.

I had another example occur today with a CRJ-100 in AE12. Using the exact same airplane, I get normal fuel cost values for similar-distance flights to Portland from Victoria (YYJ), Abbotsford (YXX), Boundary Bay (YDT), Kelowna (YLW), & Kamloops (YKA), but roughly 10x the fuel cost for the same frequency of flights from Vancouver (YVR).

YYJ-PDX: 214 miles, 7x weekly, $1806 daily fuel cost
YXX-PDX: 237 miles, 7x weekly, $1862 daily fuel cost
YDT-PDX: 241 miles, 7x weekly, $1876 daily fuel cost
YLW-PDX: 336 miles, 7x weekly, $2142 daily fuel cost
YKA-PDX: 367 miles, 7x weekly, $2226 daily fuel cost
YVR-PDX: 250 miles, 7x weekly, $13370 daily fuel cost

The issue has even occured using larger airplanes. Example using Boeing 737-400 aircraft with no IFE installed:
YVR-SMF: 721 miles, 21x weekly, $61824 daily fuel cost (normal)
YVR-YYC: 426 miles, 21x weekly, $98742 daily fuel cost (way too high, although still a profitable route, but not very)

Other flights that I had fuel cost problems with recently in AE12:
YVR-YWG (very bad with Bombardier regional jets, not as bad with 737-400, but still not great)
YVR-SEA (very short route & haemorrhages money)

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Interestingly, the daily fuel cost on my YVR-YYC flight has just been reduced by half even though the flight is exactly the same. The only thing that changed was that the competitor quit operating the route. I therefore refreshed it & boom, the fuel cost had been reduced to $45528 daily!

Now that's weird...

Still hoping for some insight on this issue. It still seems to happen to seemingly random routes. I'm having the issue again with Vancouver-Santa Ana & I tried it with several different planes: CRJ-100, CRJ-200ER, DC-9-30, 737-200Adv...

Any help or fixes would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is happening to me when I change an aircraft. Same aircraft type on the same route, yet fuel costs jump from like $7000 to $140,000.00!!!

I wonder if there is another cost that is being displayed by the fuel costs??
