Business class is optimised for short-haul

I've noticed that business class takes 1.5 times the space per seat compared to economy. In most long haul carriers, this number is 2-3 times, as seat pitch is 1.6 times and width is normally around 1.3 times. Pls explain. Also, we need the ability to choose the seat type, in particular for first and business class!!
