Hey, im new here.

I'm in world 8. I tried to lease some Super VC-10s. They were rather cheap (and old), and i could only make losses with them. How exactly does the cost system work? Is it based on fuel prices/consumption or the age of the plane? What is a decent plane on the used market - what should i look for?

It goes I think mainly by fuel consumption - older planes tend to consume a lot more fuel, which is why they are cheap.

In short, you pay peanuts, you get peanuts.

But does the difference in age of the specific plane make a difference? Example, leasing a 1 year old A319 vs a 20 year old A319?

Yes, but it's dwarfed by the difference between (any) A319 and a VC-10. :P

I think the biggest cost that will kill your profits is the fuel flow of an aircraft. Watch that number. The larger the number, the more you are going to have to pay for the fuel. Better to start with a Bombardier Q300 with about 2000+ fuel flow than a VC-10 with about 30k - 40k fuel flow.

I have now settled on leased MD-11s. They seem to be making quite decent profits, despite their age. The short haul market is so clogged up that it's not really worth joining the competition.

You should then start playing in one of the new worlds (AE7) or (AE14).
