Over history, I will always respect TWA as my favorite legacy carrier, as it was the one of the 3 US Airlines to fly overseas in the 1970s (Alongside National and Pan Am) where United, American, Eastern, Braniff and the Delta failed to achieve. 

 

But between the Big Three currently (American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines), I would have to put my vote towards American Airlines because after TWA and Pan Am... American Airlines has been the airline with the richest and most prideful history dating back into the 20's. Even though there service is sub-par, they seem to be coming back lately ....

 

  • 500+ new planes in the next 10 years including 77Ws, 788s, 789s, 737-Max, and A320 Series planes.
  • Catching up with Asia, with new service to Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai within the last 2 years.
  • Catching up with North American markets such as new service to Edmonton, Bismarck, Gainesville, etc..
  • The new US Merger giving them hubs in CLT, PHL, and PHX ... and arguably DCA.
  • Broader European/Mid East market with new destinations like Venice, Lisbon, Glasgow, Tel Aviv, Amsterdam and Scandinavian destinations from US.
  • The new (Slightly odd looking) AA Livery...
  • Former furloughed TWA, Ozark,and Reno Air employees getting called back to major airports like LAX, CLE, BOS, JFK, MCO and MIA.
  • New Flight Attendants (Nearly 1,600 New FA hires in 2013 alone)
  • A New Jingle slated for a 2015 release... that should be just as good as the Post TWA Merger/9-11 Commercial Jingle and the We Know Why You Fly Jingle
  • Q2 2014 profits up +2.2% ... making American Airlines the 3rd most profitable airline after Delta and Southwest.
  • Stocks up considerably since 2011 Bankruptcy. 
  • Finally, service is up a ton... literally Service is being upgraded to ALL cabins, when I flew AA in 2008-2012 ... it was NOT good. But now in 2014, I recently took a First Class trip from MIA-DCA an back.... AND i must say, that MD-83 flight was amazing.

 

 

To me, Delta was horrible about 5 years ago during its collapse and merger.... American Airlines is just slower to me. AA will definitely be up to Delta standards soon, so I see no reason to lower AA for that.

 

...Now United is a different story.. there is no saving that pathetic excuse for an airline.

Jetblue is really good... it reminds me of a TWA or Pan Am, i agree. Hopefully one day it works its way from an LCC to a Legacy. (THey already have 4+ hour flights and first class :P ) ..

Jetblue sould get some a330 or a350 and go transatlantic they are the only good airline in the US.

Can an airline actually transition to "legacy" status? I thought that was a term reserved for airlines in existence at time of deregulation in the United States (mid to late 1970s, if memory serves).

 

 

Possibly, if they cut off budget services, keep the high quality and start acting as one of the Big Three... they could eventually make their way to a Legacy carrier. I give it 10 years until they announce service to Sao Paulo/Rio/Buenos Aires and atleast 15 until they even THINK about making the journey from Boston/JFK to Europe or Elsewhere. 

 

Long road though, and your memory is correct! Deregulation was ehh 1978 but some carriers were affected later into the early 80s (Like TWA)

Lmfao... true enough... however... seeing as the term Legacy Carrier was used to describe an airline that had established interstate routes by the time of the deregulation act of 1978 puts them distinct from lcc's such as southwest... DL, AA, UA, CO, US, AS, HA, WA, TW, PA, NW, NA, EA, BN... they were the legacies.

Alas this is what we are faced with today:

-AA
-AS
-DL
-HA
-UA
-US

Because along the way the following occured:

CO merged with UA
NW merged with DL
TW merged with AA
WA merged with DL
PA went bankrupt (but most of its assets absorbed by UA, DL and CO)
EA went bankrupt (most of its assets absorbed by AA and DL)
NA merged with PA
BN went bankrupt


So granted, not all of them are active, but the major players still are. A majority of them consolidated to strengthen their position, something that the UA ceo in 1976 predicted if de-regulation took place.

TW was my favorite.
NW was my second.
CO was my third.
AA is my fourth... so let's see what happens with AA as my previous favorites found their names cast by the wayside.

I still haven't found trans-Atlantic quality from an American airline that has equaled the service TWA provided in the late 1990s.

 

 

That is so true... 36 inch legroom, amazing top level service, and unlimited TATL Meals ...

Most of these airlines do not deserve the term full-service legacy carrier anymore. Virtually all of them charge for checked bags. In the US, either Alaska Airlines, Southwest or Jetblue would get my vote. No one else.

Hawaiian is a niche airline and Alaska is puny compared to Delta, American, and United.

Seems like the airlines I love the most are not here well...

 

1) Pan American World Airways 

2) Trans World Airlines

 

but since the two are not here I'm going with North West Airlines.
