When Airlines come to choosing Boeing or Airbus, what are they specifically looking for e.g. Boeing's 737 Compared to Airbus's A320 family.

Edited above list, as models often compete with the manufacturer's other models and seating capacity often overlap

But choosing Boeing over Airbus or vice-versa depends on lots of things. It depends on a lot of factors like efficiency, mission, and financing. For example, one could choose an A330 over a 787. The A330 is better suited for shorter routes, is cheaper, and can be delivered sooner than the 787, though the 787 is more fuel efficient for long-haul routes and costs less to maintain. Recently the A320 garnered more sales because Airbus was offering better financing, even though the 737NG had slightly better fuel efficiency.

this is made for boeing.

boeing-------------------airbus (or boeing replacement)

707---------------------airbus had nothing
717---------------------A318
727---------------------airbus had nothing
737-200-----------------A318
737-300/400/500--------A319/320/319
737-600/700/800/900----A318/319/320/321
747-400-----------------A340-600, 777-300ER
747-8i-------------------A380, but really the 747-8 is in its own class
757-200-----------------A321, B737-900ER, but the 757 IS ITS OWN PLANE, nothing compares to it.
757-300-----------------Airbus has nothing, possibly 787-3
767-200ER/300ER--------A330-200, 787-8
767-400ER---------------A330-300, 787-3/9
777-200ER---------------A330-300, A340-200/300/500, A350-900
777-200LR---------------airbus has nothing
777-300ER---------------A340-600, possibly A350-1000 based on
787-3-------------------airbus has nothing
787-8/9------------------A350-800 for 787-9 only

the a350 is to try to cut into the 777 market, not really to replace them...

also BOeing is more expensive to buy upfront, but are cheaper to maintain. they actually are more economical for the most part also, that really depends on the use.

it was, but it came too late... its role now will be a frieghter. it competed with the 777 so they werent gonna keep it going, so they just finished all out standing orders and then shut it down. it probably was the only MD aircraft besides the 717 that could of been kept going. probably just as a frieghter though at least until the 777F would of been announced, but then again, the 777f might not of happened...

It was mainly because the MD11 had a lot of teething problems, which MD didn't really bother to solve. It also couldn't carry a full load at full range unlike the competitors planes. Basically the 777 and the A333 were much better from a beancounter's prospective, and the A340 also helped kill the Md11.
