Saudi National Airlines | Group A | Riyadh (RUH)

WoJov5W.png

Saudi National Airlines is a full-service Saudi Arabian carrier based out of Riyadh King Khalid International Airport. It is one of the largest airlines in Saudi Arabia, operating a relatively large fleet of 190 aircraft and flying them to 145 destinations in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. The airline was founded in November 1945 by the Saudi Government with 2 Douglas DC-3s given to the country as a gift from President Roosevelt. Since then, Saudi National Airlines has grown to become a very strong player in the domestic and international market. Operating state-of-the-art aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Lockheed L-1011 in the past, the airline now operates some of the most fuel efficient aircraft on the market, such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 787 and Airbus A350. The current in-operation passenger fleet consists of 45 Airbus A320s, 12 Airbus A321s, 26 Airbus A330-200s, 22 Airbus A330-300s, 4 Airbus A340-600s (to be retired very soon), 7 Airbus A350-900s, 32 Boeing 777-300ERs, 14 Boeing 787-9s, and 5 Boeing 787-10s, with neo versions of the A320 and A321, LR and XLR A321s, and more A350-900s, and 787-10s on order as well. In addition, the airline has a cargo division, Saudi National Cargo, operating a number of A330-200Fs, 747-400Fs, 747-8Fs, and 777Fs.

Shown above is HZ-AL73, one of the many 777-300ERs operated by Saudi National. Built in 2006, the plane has served a reliable, long life ever since. This plane was once converted into a temporary freighter in 2020, hauling PPE and other equipment to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic, however it has now returned to normal passenger duties. The 777, A350 and 787 fleets also helped to phase out the airlines' aging Boeing 747-400s, which were retired from passenger service in late 2017.

GROUP C | Bushra Air Cargo بشرة للشحن الجوي | Riyadh, (RUH/OREK), Saudi ArabiaC2U65tA.png

gallery_49119_3658_411748.png

Bushra Air Cargo's design is more or less what I think a cargo airline in Saudi Arabia would look like with partial state ownership. Simplistic in nature, with certain elements to display both class and sophistication. The name Bushra itself in Arabic translates to "good news" or "blessings" with the idea that the airline is the bringer of such things. Bushra's livery design is one that boasts national pride as well as tradition, with green representing Saudi Arabia, but also of Islam and Muhammad. The gold is used as a tertiary compliment to the green, while also symbolising Saudi Arabia's wealth and international stature. The wings and box of the logo are meant to symbolize air cargo as a whole, with the Saudi specification located in the center with the palm tree and swords.

Thank you for your consideration.

Group C  | Yemen Air Cargo اليمن للشحن الجوي | Sana'a (SAH)

IATA - YC | ICAO - YAC | Callsign - Yemen Cargo

Yemen Air Cargo is a small cargo airline founded in 2000. Originally having all operations done out of Sana'a International Airport from 2000 to 2015 then airline moved its operations to Aden, after the bombings ran by the Saudis which destroyed Sana'a Airport, were it has now been operating out of since 2016. Currently the airline only operates two aircraft, a 747-200SF and DC-10-40CF which is a huge reduction from its fleet of 11 in 2015 where the majority of its their aircraft: x2 A300-600R(F), 707-320C, 727-200F(adv), x2 IL-76TDs, x2 AN-12s and a sole AN-124 were destroyed and left abandoned due to the destruction of Sana'a Airport. The lucky two aircraft were at Aden airport during the attacks however the 747 (7O-FRT, shown below) was already grounded at Aden stored for till 2017 where it was flown to Tehran for heavy maintenance and stored again till 2020 where it then returned to service hauling REDACTED freight to and from Yemen to unknown destinations as N/A on FlightRadar24. Some say that the 747 has been flying to Sharjah, Tehran and even Guangzhou for reasons that still remain unknown...

AEAD 2021

As an added incentive I've come up with a grand prize.  Since this year the contest did not have an official Host Sponsor I've decided that the 2021 winners from each group will have the rights to use the AEAD 2021 branding, with special "Best Arab Airline 2021" titles, for the coming year.

The winning airlines can display the AEAD 2021 branding in special liveries, posters, banners and any other special graphics.

Congratulations to all the winners!

This year's entries have been some of the most diverse yet. Design quality has varied significantly this year, but I'm glad to see people making a genuine effort. However, I would like to officially proclaim this edition of AEAD as the Year of the Halftone Pattern since it appears to be the latest style.

I would like to remind you all that designing a great Arabic airline comes down to attention to detail. And while some interpret this as "just add more things," I generally mean that every element must have place, substance, and value and needs to work with every other part of the design. More importantly, correctly researching the Arabic language and elements of Arab history and culture can go a long way for the feasibility of your design. I hope everyone takes the time to read the commentaries and learn a thing or two.

See you next year, for the fifth (!) edition of the AE Arabic Design Contest!

Really glad to participate in Boing's contest a second time - can't wait to try and incorporate the official Emblem of Sudan as many times as possible to my flag carrier next year (how could anyone say no to a startled bird with a goatee). Thanks for the great feedback!
