Greetings!

Balkans-map.jpg

With the recent trend of design challenges on this site, I thought I would try something new and host a design challenge.

Starting on the 25th I'll be running this design challenge on the most underused area of the world for brands on this site, as it is quite rare to see a Balkan airline.

Greece on the other hand is quite popular on this site, so for brands here I want you to think outside of the box, and be creative!

The rules are few;

  • One Airline Per Competitor

  • Must Be Original Design

  • Can Be Passenger or Cargo

  • Preferably Post-Breakup of Yugoslavia, so post-1999 (Though Yugoslavian brands will be allowed)

Submissions will be judged on;
  • Cohesiveness

  • Originality

  • Quality of Execution

Contest will end Saturday, May 2nd at midnight, Central Standard Time. Results will be posted 2-3 days later.
(this is my first time doing this, so cut me some slack)

Good luck!

Airline - Bŭlgarska
Aircraft - McDonnell Douglas MD-82 | LZ-PUY
Delivered to Air Canadien, 1983
Sold to AeroInternational, 2007
Sold to Bŭlgarska, 2013
Sold to Realines, 2018
Livery - Standard 1991
Country Bulgaria

Bŭlgarska is the flag carrier of Bulgaria, founded in 1996 after the collapse of the previous flag carrier - Air Bulgaria - due to adverse economic conditions in the country. The airline started operations with several Tu-154s, and one ex-Air Bulgaria A320. Struggling from the outset, Bŭlgarska sold off the A320, and worked to replace the Tupolevs with second- and third-hand DC-9s. In the early 2000s, various MD-80 variants supplemented, then replaced the DC-9s. Starting in around 2010, Bŭlgarska expanded by buying a few more MD-80s and leasing 737-300s and -400s, and some of these 737s were painted in a new livery. However, due to increasing financial difficulties after 2014 the airline found it hard to keep up on lease payments, resulting in all the 737s being returned to their lessors by 2017. This left Bŭlgarska with seven MD-82s and six MD-88s, all owned by the airline, and all in original livery introduced upon the airline's inception - the one shown here, featuring the colors of the Bulgarian flag and a traditional folk pattern. However, continuing economic issues has led to some of these MD-80s now being sold to other carriers, and Bŭlgarska's continued survival is now in question.

Balkan is an incorrect term for this context, you should use Southeastern Europe.

I might make something though.

After Montenegro's split from Serbia in 2006, one of the new parliament's first endeavors to promote Macedonia as a tourist destination was the creation of Montenegrin Airways as the a large scale state owned flag carrier. The airline has a fairly short and moderately turbulent history up to this point, serving more of a purpose as a political tool than an actual transportation method. This was most clearly seen when President Milo Đukanović set aside a large portion of the nation's budget in 2008 for the purchase of the largest plane that could be bought on a slim budget. Thus, Montenegrin Airways received a beleaguered Lockheed L-1011-500 which it still operates to this day on bi-daily flights to New York JFK. As if the aircraft's purchase was not already an obvious political stunt, Prime Minister Đukanović pulled some strings and the aircraft was christened in his name.

Lol, dumb mistake, I'll fix it

Balkan is an incorrect term for this context, you should use Southeastern Europe.

I might make something though.

I see where you're coming from, but I am trying to focus on two areas, within southeast europe, not southeast europe as a whole

Aerobosna doesn't really need a special introduction. Founded in 1992, joined DWA in 2003. Fleet of ATR-72-600's, Airbus A320neo's and Boeing 787-8's.

The flag carrier of Bosnia and Herzegovina having acquired 8 brand new Airbus A320neo aircraft in late 2018 chose to revise their livery from a total glossy blue scheme to a scheme with a white belly, while keeping the tail design which defined the airline. The aircraft were named after people who marked the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with E7-ABO (shown) being named after Mirza Delibašić, one of the greatest basketball players that the world has ever seen.

Having secured the job as the main airline for the Winter European Youth Festival 2019, appropriate decals were added to the aircraft and the new A320's were used to transfer the participants quickly and efficiently.

Adriatic Airlines - "Адриатическо"

Adriatic Airlines was founded in 1983 in Bulgaria with a single Tupolev TU-154 which was bought from Aeroflot in 1984. A single daily route from Sofia, Bulgaria to Sarajevo, Yugoslavia was served by the single aircraft. Due to high demand, a second TU-154 was purchased from Aeroflot in 1986 which opened up new routes across Southern-Europe and Moscow. By 1989, twelve routes were being flown by three TU-154s. After the break up of Yugoslavia in 1991, Adriatic temporarily stopped all flights until 1992. All three TU-154s were scrapped and two A310-200s and three A320-200s were flown from Sofia to 15 routes including London Gatwick. In 2011, Adriatic announced a major re-brand and scrapped the two A310-200s and placed an order for three A330-200s, 12 B737-800s and 4 ATR-72s. As of 2020, all of these aircraft had been delivered with the newest B737-800 being delivered in March 2019. New routes have been opened including long-haul flights.
