I've tried gimp and inkscape. Both are pretty bad for it. What is a good free software for logo making?

I use GIMP. It's pretty easy, you just need to practice on it.

I use Google drawings through drive. Whilst it is a pain to make a lot of irregular shapes, it's pretty simple and easy to use and with enough work you can get a passable logo.

It can definitely work for logos. I've never really had too much trouble creating logos in it. A combination of what you can find on the internet, paint bucket tool, pencil, path tool and a few more, and you're set.
