The above is correct. It's a bit of a strange one, but it has a lot of history to it.
In the pioneering days of aviation travel post-WW!, a government-sponsored air race was announced to fly from England to Australia. The winning team would be the first people in the world to accomplish such a feat. At the Australian end, a small group of men are contracted to check out a number of the "outback" towns in the northern Australian states of Queensland & The Northern Territory (just look at a map, you'll see them) to identify which would be suitable to build landing strips for the planes coming across the vast northern Australian wilderness. The remoteness of these towns led these 2 men to realise that an air service connecting these towns with both each other & the coastal cities was desperately needed. Initially carrying just mail & a few passengers at a time, they had no idea their "Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service" , or Q.A.N.T.A.S., would become the global flagship Australian airline.
If you're interested to know more, just google them.

Well I'm glad this cleared up. I was watching a video where the guy pronounced it as Quantas. I didn't know thats how it's actually pronounced. I thought it was just an Australian thing like how they pronounce Zebra as Zeb-ruh instead of Zee-bruh.
Umm... no. Zeb-ruh instead of Zee-bruh is correct, or there would be 2 e’s in it.

Calm down little Liberal, I wasn't lecturing you on anything. I might not be from South Australia but I'm still Australian. But you inadvertently raised an interesting point - if Qantas is no longer Government owned but rather a listed company, albeit with a 49% limit on foreign ownership, is it really the "National Carrier" anymore?
