Anyone else here play DCS? It's a combat flight sim. I just started playing 1.5, mainly because I like military airplanes, and partly since I already had a Extreme 3d Pro, and a DIY opentrack head-tracking contraption. I bought the F-15C module a couple hours ago, just to see if my potato laptop could handle it, and it does, quite nicely actually. I soon intend to get FC3, and a true HOTAS. Overall, I like it. Still haven't beaten an Su-27 in a gunfight though... yet.

I tried installing it on my old laptop, it ran the first time and crashed upon starting the actual simulation part. My new laptop has an i5 so I might try it again. I thought the idea would be nice but I haven't had the chance to play yet.

It's a great game, the f15c is great for BVR, just be mindful that individual planes tend basically be more realistic/controllable and therefore harder than the same ones within the FC bundle, but that also makes them more capable in good hands. Look around the official forums for more precises explanations on this.

 

Ignore the combined arms dlc, you'll be much better off grbabing command air naval operations.

 

Do check out video tutorial on youtube, they make a huge difference.

FINALLY! I managed to beat an Su-27(with 56% fuel to be fair) in a guns-only dogfight!

This is a BVR 4v4. Those R-73's are quite pesky WVR... they can make > 90° turns

This is a rematch of the 1v1 I did earlier. Thanks to better energy management, and tweaked joystick settings, I won in less than a minute.

if you start getting serious about it i recommend reading fighter combat, tactics and manoeuvring by robert shaw, it's about real life air combat but it actually proves useful in games such as DCS world as well.

Ok so update it does work on my new computer but I do not have any addons as I am legit broke

 

However the Su-25 is very fun to fly and hopefully one day I'll be able to use the weapons without being in one of the flight training missions

I've watched quite a few DCS videos, never heard of those though. I'll check it out.

If you click on "campaigns" from the menu, and click on "Su-25T", there should be a campaign called "The Georgian Oil War".

I'm very good in War Thunder and I'm good a pilotage but these key bindings are kicking my but lol.

I decided to try the F-15C's "Bear Trap" campaign a couple of hours ago, and it is interesting so far. The first mission was a boring terrain familiarization, the second was me + a wingman escorting 2 F-16C on a ground attack mission. I splashed a MiG-29
WVR with 2 AMRAAM's. Wingman got hit by the MiG's R-73, and both F-16s got hit by SA-19 SAM's (though they destroyed the main target first). Because I strayed a bit too low (under 15000ft), a SA-19 targeted me, but I simply climbed out of its flight envelope, and it lagged behind me. The third one though... that will be a bit tricky. It involves sneaking low "under the radar" to ambush a Russian AWACS, protected by 2 Su-27s. This, unfortunately, requires invading Russian territory, thus putting us in range of the radar of the SA-10 "Grumble", the deadliest SAM in DCS. The only defense is to fly very low. At the same time, I have to climb quickly while exiting the combat area, to avoid the SA-19s. I will be trying it tomorrow.

Well, almost all the DCS stuff on steam is 50% off untill the 13th, and FC3 and The standalone F-15C/Su-27/Su-33/A-10A/Su-25 can be activated in either the steam or non-steam, so I decided to pick up FC3 for $19.99. The standalone stuff are $4.99, pretty nice sale.

Well, I decided to try 2.5, and (as expected) it basically fried my laptop. It ate up every single byte of my 8gb RAM available, freezing the laptop.
