First off, welcome to AE. One of the first things you'll notice is that the game itself isn't very relevant anymore, especially since you're already in the forums. The game has not been developed since 2013 and either Yuxi is planning some huge update and leaving us all in the dark or he's very busy with other things so I wouldn't expect to see much development. Second, as you've already noticed, the forum is in the middle of a bit of a tiff. This happens about once or twice a year when we get a lot of new members. I've been here for three years and have seen it consistently. However, especially when looking at older members, you'll see a lot of people form friendships through the site. I know I have a pretty decent sized group myself, and I'm sure you'll find some as well if you stick around. I'd like to give you a few tips to make your time here easier on yourself and us.
First, in the top right of the page, there is a search bar. This game has been around since 2005 and many players have a great "new" idea we've seen a hundred times before. Before you post about a new idea, just do a quick search for it, because a lot of stuff has been suggested before and there is a possibility for new content. Also, if you search and find something that's been discussed before but seems to have been completely forgotten, it's probably alright to start a new topic about it. Just remember it's unlikely to see much development besides new aircraft and airports.
Second, keep your cool. A lot of people take things personally that aren't personal and as of late we've seen a lot of fighting, some of the worst I've seen here. It's really started by a handful of people, some of which seem to want to instigate things and some of which get offended by the instigators. Just remember most of the people don't know you and keep calm and you'll be better off than a lot of new members.
Third, there is no chat room on the AE client. It's been moved. So the message saying that all the slots are full is really a message saying that the client chat no longer exists. If you want to go to the new chat, a Discord chat, there's a topic you can find with that handy dandy search bar.
Fourth, a lot of members gain reputation by painting planes. We have an awesome guy named Med here who provides us with templates to paint our own liveries on. Some liveries, like Vanguard, NEA, and Oceanic, are very very good. Others are not so good but can be helped. A lot of members here, myself included, mentor other members on the side. Personally I've mentored or partly mentored close to 10 people by now. But anyhow, liveries are a lot of AE now because the game is stagnant. Just remember that when making a livery, you need a program like photoshop or GIMP (I use GIMP because I have no money and it's free). Also, a rainbow plane does not look good, even though many people have tried. I was very inartistic before I came here and now I feel like I can design pretty subpar liveries . And if you don't think your product is good enough, it can be with enough time. Four years ago I had a name and an idea for an airline. Now I've made significant steps with my own project Quantum, and more is coming soon.
All in all, this place can be good for you. It's been good for me, I've learned a lot about aviation history, as well as memorized every commercial jet in the game and then some. I've made friends and personal connections, and my personal growth has been significant.
What happens here while you're here is up to you. Good luck.
