Do airports update every 5 or 10 years in-game?

I have frequently noticed changes throughout the play of a round. I have notice demand is higher before a route is served and lower after. Not sure if it changes as prices change between to airports too.

In the real world direct one cost and connecting another so not sure if game takes that into account.
