Well, as plane enthusiasts, I guess everyone on this website already wondered who invented the airplane, Santos Dumont or the Wright brothers?

As a Brazilian, I grew up listening and learning that Santos Dumont did it first and that the Wright brothers did not really 'fly' or that was not a real plane and stuff like that, clearly a demonstration of Brazilian pride, patriotism and a attempt to create heroes. However, I never heard the American side and how they tell it. So what's your opinion as an American, as non-American, as plane enthusiasts in general, what's your thoughts and what do you know about it? Who did it first? Santos Dumont or Wright brothers?

I don't know much information about Santos or the Wright Brothers... Or the topic itself. The only thing i've seen was in the Rio Olympics ceremony where there was shown a small plane flying or something, when I asked someone told me that it was a reference to Santos doing the first flight. I haven't researched about it but I guess the brazilian goverment says Santos Dumont flew first.

The Wright Flyer's first true flight was on December 17, 1903. The Brazilian argument of not really flying is false, it was airborne for 59 seconds on December 17. By 1905, they had achieved a flight of thirty nine minutes. Dumont did not put his plane into the air until 1906. The Wright Flyer was also a very real plane. It consisted of an airfoil, engine, and controls. I suppose your nationalism is in play and it is as well in the US. In fact, I didn't even know who Santos Dumont was until I wrote this post.

I just knew there was an airport in Brazil named after him. I thought he was a war hero or a Portuguese king or something
