It's not even close to the A350/787. The A350 is a whole different category, and the 787 is a clean sheet design with more efficiency and tons more range. The neo is way late for most airlines to be interested, and offers nothing new, as opposed to the 777X with more capacity and range.

Well, there's quite a few reasons for this:

  1. A350 is cannibalizing the sales, and if an airline can afford the A330NEO but not the A350, they probably aren't stable enough to have widebodies anyhow. The 330neo is cheaper, but it's also smaller, shorter range, and it looks worse too :P
  2. 787 - same size as the 330neo (787-8), but it's longer range
  3. 787 is also a brand-new designed is more modern, same thing with the 350

From what I read on A.net discissions, the A330NEO seems to burn around 4% more fuel than the 787 on longer missions, and 2% on shorter ones.

A330neo is way better looking then the A350. The A350 is ugly :P

That's an opinion many airlines don't share.

I wouldn't go that far, 787 looks far better, but you are right to an extent

What does the 787 have that the A350 doesn't, if you say it looks better?

Engines. Wingtips aren't as forced-looking. Nose. Doesn't look like a raccoon

787 looks far more cramped too. But blame the airlines :)

Some comparisons as to why it might not be at the top of a lot of airlines xmas wish list.

Also blame the airlines for making the economy cabins of many 777 planes cramped as well XP
