I was wondering, since I live about 20 minutes from the airport, is it possible to extend the runway of SNA? In my opinion I think it is possible. I did some research and that the engineers could install a system called an Engineered materials arrestor system (EMAS) https://en.wikipedia...or_system kindalike what San Diego has.

What do you guys think? And yes, the noise curfew will remain the same for all aircrafts.

Should have been in real-world aviation, but I'll let it slide.

The problem with EMAS is that it's only an emergency thing. The whole problem with SNA is that even an extension would not give enough space for something too large to get in. Along with that, LAX is the established airport for long-haul stuff. The city has no reason to even develop SNA. If I were them I would try to put everything into LAX because we know the airport can handle it.

EMAS systems are for emergency situations, not regular arrivals, so I fail to see how that's relevant. SNA could possibly add that if they really wanted to.

I took a look at a map of SNA and I reinforced my statement. Although there is room for a runway extension, it is not enough for any significant changes to traffic. Along with that, the terminal is built quite similarly to TWA terminal in JFK, where it is rather thin. In the event that SNA receives traffic in the form of, lets say, a 777, there will not be enough space for the passengers in the gate area. I thought that the side that would be expanded would be in trouble due to the highway but it isn't elevated so that's out of the question. Santa Ana already has problems with noise abatement which causes extreme takeoffs and turns, so adding bigger noisier jets makes no sense to me. In the end, I highly doubt that this will happen. Maybe they'll add EMAS, but a runway extension to improve the amount of traffic is highly unlikely.

Well all is possible if you have a lot of money. the airport is surrounded by houses. then is more complicated.

Adding distance to the runway is good for non thrust-reverse operation  The EMAS is a good help in case of overrun the runway. Usually the pilots do a briefing before takeoff when they plan how many weight have  in the moment of the take off and land, they plan how they will stop the plane. taking in mid the TODA/LDA for the aircraft specifications, rubber in the runway and weather present.

The airport doesn’t have much need for expansion. It would be nice, but then again, LAX is about 70 km away.

And it would be pretty difficult. The runway is surrounded by the 405 on the north and the 73 on the south, with not much space in between.

There hasn’t been any particular overshoots at SNA, so there’s really isn’t a need for EMAS either.

But still glad to work on my new home airport :)
