It's sad to see the Jumbo retire, but United had a point. These days the 747 is a dinosaur, thanks to newer twinjets that could travel longer distances while saving tons of fuel. And blame the 777 on this one, as it has cannibalized 747 sales to an extent.

Chances are, none of the major US airlines would order it.

The 747-8 is about to die. Boeing's already producing very little of it now, as there are only a few orders left.

True - however, It's been my Spirit Plane since it came out - I was like 7 then,  but still it was my favorite. I'm never going to give up on that plane, even though the non-BBJ pax version has run out of orders.

True - but one can still hope :D

It's being beaten by a lot of newer aircraft. Many carriers around the world, are replacing them with 777-300ERs, and also small airplanes like the 787 and A350.

No, the 747-8 is not going to die. Maybe in 25 years they will die. The -8 is more successful as a freighter, and will probably see more use in the future.

Perhaps FedEx and UPS might still keep it alive...

I still remember travelling with BA from LHR-GRU-EZE back when BA did it with a 747 and stopped at GRU.

Best flights of my life back then, and I always got business on the top floor because it was just exciting. Now they have these terrible 777s flying it, so I make a point of using American and stopping at JFK or using LATAM through BSB, GRU or Rio as a sign of resistance, tho I don't think its working.

That being said... the 747 remains an icon and defiance of all the laws of flying that had been known.

My grandfather who flew with it when they had the piano aboard on the United 747s... I'm going to look for the picture of it, though I'll doubt I'll find it.
