Connecting passengers, but that's about it. It's what allows spamlines to become what they become. But, for realistic airlines there is not much point in having more than about 5 at most (around 5% of a decent size airline network)

Yes - they give you more passengers - especially connecting pax

Well... you can get around up to 30,000% increase in passengers on a route.
