I came across this political restriction on this route Calgary international - New York LaGuardia.

I find this route extremely weird since I can fly from.

Calgary international - New York - John F Kenndy

Anyone know why?

You cannot fly more than 1500 mi from LGA, due to 9/11 restrictions. The same is true for DCA, that is 1250 mi instead

I believe it's more of a non-competition thing. Both NYC and DC have three airports, two of which are much bigger and newer than the ones with restrictions. I think that the restrictions are the government's attempts to make JFK, EWR, IAD, and BWI the main area airports.

Oh, you're probably right - I just heard it was 9/11

Thats not it, its a slot thing. DCA is the closest airport to the Washington DC area but the airport isn't that big and there is limited expansion space. There are 3 runways at DCA but only 1 is really used and even that runway is only about 7,000ft in length, so they have a slot system that only allows a certain number of flights.

Also DCA actually carries a lot more domestic passengers than IAD while IAD is the primary international gateway.

Although today there are only select few routes that are allowed beyond the perimeter, but the only international flights are to Toronto which is still inside the perimeter.

yeah - LAS-DCA and SEA-DCA are allowed, among others, but you're right, it is closest to the city.

Actually since about 2012 there a good number of flights beyond the perimeter. American is allowed a single flight to PHX, and another to LAX. Delta has a flight to SLC and LAX. Jetblue has a non-stop service to SJU, United to DEN and SFO. And Alaska airlines/Virgin America flies to SEA, PDX, LAX and SFO.

It would be cool to see this kind of system implemented into AE kinda like how Dallas-love allows flights in 2014. But with only a certain number of flights beyond the perimeter.

I am an American based airline that won't let me operate STX to Europe.

that would break the game, because the bigger airlines will fill all slots in one minute

The rule at LGA was enacted by the Port Authority in 1984 in an attempt to curb overcrowding. The only exception are nonstop flights to Denver.

I would. When an airline is big enough with hundreds of planes avaliable, you can literally fill all routes/slots from that airport within an hour, to one get market advantage and two make sure I do not get competition.

okay fair enough. But still - because of IRL restrictions being lifted in 2014 or 2015 or whatever, that should happen then in the game.

Anyhow, airlines just use up the slots by spamming DHC-7s and DHC-8s and CRJs and ERJs instead
