I was looking at the hub creation menu because I wanted to create my own. But, when I was reading through the description for it all I saw is that gates will cost more. Is there anything good about hubs?
Are there perks for making hubs?

HUBS are one of the most important thing in this game if you want to have a glorious airlines. All the biggest airlines of all time in AE had hundred of them.

No wonder why legacy airlines are always the way to go in AE

If the place you want to make a hub is a terminal, you may as well since the cost is negligible. And it protects some of your revenue

Imagine this:
A to B - 10 pax demand
B to C - 10 pax demand
A to C - 10 pax demand
Now you build a hub in B. Connect your new hub - B - to D, E, F, G, H, and so on up to Z.
Now you can take your 10 pax from B to C at a regular price. But you can also take another 600 blue/connecting pax that want to go from D to C, from E to C, from F to C and so on. It works the other way too - from C to D, from C to E and so on. They will change planes in B and will fill your plane going on that final leg.
Now, the connecting pax pay only 50% of the ticket price. But you have a lot of them waiting for a free seat, meaning you can raise the prices 500%. Now they're paying 250% of standard price. Voila.
It's not realistic in a real world sense, but nothing in this game is. At least it's less boring that mindlessly connecting dots and "competing". Playing this game realistically is masochistic, but you know, whatever floats your boat.

It will give you more passengers. I always open a lot of hubs, and while it isn't the most realistic thing in the world, it does get you a lot of passengers, especially when you're in a high-competition area.

It certainly has the potential to boost a 70% loadfactor up to 100%, sometimes from even lower.

Its worth on the long-run.
Hubs protects a portion of your revenue
Hubs provides you the connecting passengers you need to fill up your planes
