My airline SupaFly has a fleet of 7 Douglas DC-9-40s in 1978 (along with many A300B4s), and they are leased until 1980 and 1981, which is when I am going to think about replacing them. At that point, would their fuel consumption/maintenance still be economically viable, or would it be better to use a different aircraft? I would either

a) Keep the DC-9s and wait for the A320 in 1988 to replace them

b ) Replace them when their leases expire with their modernized cousin, the MD-8X

c) Keep them until 1984, when I replace them with the 733

d) something else

What do you think I should do?

The 737-300 is your best choice. If you can wait until 1990, the 737-500 would be your best choice. The A320s are much larger than your DC-9s and aren't really that comparable.

If you are looking for a replacement that is around the same class and size as the DC-9's, the 737 might just be the better choice as mentioned above. However, I would choose to convert to the Airbus as it is a better, more efficient, and has better profits compared to most planes in its market size.

If you are not considering increasing the number of DC-9's in your fleet, then the 737 would suit your needs better. If you are considering more expansion in the near future, perhaps the A320 would be the better choice. Anyway, be sure to choose the right family of aircraft and stick with it!

I hope that the above will be helpful.

Keep your DC-9's, they're tanks.

A320 is pretty trash, 733 is best option, if not, do the MD-80.

Another DC 9. They're on production until 1985 for everything but the -10. Or maybe an MD 87.

It's really hard finding something to compete with that at that time. It's almost like a 757. The only replacement is itself. There's a reason United has a hub hub at EWR.

Keep the DC-9s till the early 90s then dish them out for what ever you want, I say this because I am sickened when airlines both in AE and in real life keep battles tanks like DC-9's, 737's for 5 to 10 years. But I would wait till the 90s as it makes it easier to expand.

I personally like the DC-9, especially the -30. Replace with the MD-80 or the 737

I suggest following up with the MD-8X series. They're good aircraft, and I'm going with the same plan. I have about 20-25 DC-9s in service :P
