So, I recently came up with certain high-density concept for business class layout for A330 in particular. Most airlines utilized the front of the cabin for the latest business class cabin with 32C seat with all aisle-access and 36C seat with most aisle-access. the 32C seat cabin usually require minimum of 43" seat pitch for the reverse herringbone seat (Cathay or Delta). While the 36C seat cabin require 45" seat pitch with narrower seat/bed and some seat with no direct aisle-access. Here you could see the stack configurations that helped reduce the seat pitch to 40" while retaining the all aisle-access feature. Making the seat up to 36C seat in A330-300 and 24C to 26C seat in A330-200.

Seat Pitch 40" (Shell to Shell)

Seat Width 20"

Bed Width 20"

Bed Length 80"

Aisle Width 18"

This is just the first stage of the design.

Doesn't that layout look cramped?

Yeah, Similar to Original Herringbone seat. This probably work for regional flights less than 6 hours. It's just an early concept though.

You won't like British Airways current Business class seat.

I would suspect BA is trying to market gussied-up premium economy seats as "business" as a ploy to generate more profits by cramming more passengers in the cabin <_<

Well, it's just a label, at the end of the day, they can't sell those seat with next gen business class price.

BA have had the same seat design for years. While not the best business class layout, it's certainly a step up from premium economy:

80'' of pitch is more than many airlines offer in bed in J so this is good. However it looks a lot like Virgin Atlantic's A330 J.

It's not 80" seat pitch though, it's 80" bed length, seat pitch shell to shell is 40". B787's reverse herringbone is around 42" shell to shell.

Any disadvantages with using that kind of J-only layout?

Well, seat width is 1" narrower compared to typical reversed herringbone. The passengers in the middle also would have elevated bed when fully recline while the one next to them would have the seat closer to the ground when fully recline.

Not ideal if you're overweight.

Yeah, apart from SQ business class, Apex suit, and most first class seat. Overweight passengers never had Ideal seating anyway.

Overweight passengers = bigger seats = more expensive tickets
