I always noticed there is a lot of 'zombie' airlines and their owners just forget about them. They hold significant number of gates and whole fleet of modern jets with 0 hour, also a lot of these airlines are created at the early stage of game, so they are too big to fall.

 

It will be good if these 'zombie' airlines can be purchased and merged in by other good airlines. How about if an airline has not been attended by the owner for X years then it can be put on market for the other players to buy?

If an airline is not attended by the owner in an amount of time it is rendered in active and is deleted.

Also the purchasing thing wouldn't work since the 'zombie' airline would have to agree to sell it to you unless if its after its 'deleted' but when its deleted its just like being bankrupt, aircraft are sold in market gates returned etc.

They should give the option to buy the airline if the person is not active for a while!

If all of their planes are at zero utilization, they won't be holding significant numbers of gates.  Gates are returned to the airport after a couple of months of not being used.  They might still have their terminals, but that makes no difference to competitors.
