As the title states, I'm curious as to the best (in general) for each decade (60s/70s/etc)? I'm talking about fuel efficiency, pax per flight, etc.

If you count Fuel Flow / Seats as a rating here they are:

30's - DC-3

40's - VC.1 Viking

50/60's - Viscount 810

70's - DHC-7

90-10's - F406

But they have s***ty seating/range

If we make the seats minimum of 100 (kinda reasonable) and the range minimum 1000 miles (also reasonable) we get this:

30's Nothing matches

40's 377 Stratocruiser

50's DC-7C

60/70's CL-44 Yukon (My favourite early workhorse)

80/90's Il-62M

00's A317-100LR

10's CS300

Other factors come into it.

For example, you might be okay with greater fuel flow for more seats to save on gate costs.

It all depends on how much you rate each airplane quality.

Also, all the above comes from a simple formula in excel, nothing fancy.

Fair enough, appreciate the input.

It's usually best to find the plane to fit your requirements.

If you're in a regional area, then you'll need planes with longer range.

The L-1649 Starliner has a range of 4710 miles

but is only available new between 1951-1958 with 106 seats.

The earliest comparable aircraft are the Comet 4C (One of the worst for fuel economy) and the Britannia (worse fuel economy than the L-1649, but still okay)

The earliest aircraft with better range is the 707-320B / 707-320C (320B is horrible fuel efficiency, the 320C is worse than any of the above ones, but still manageable) available 1959-1978

The DC-8's in the 60's are good when you get to that stage.

The CL-44 Yukon and the IL-62M are the largest seating fuel efficient planes. The Tu-114 is fairly efficient and bumps the seating up to 220

Stay away from the VC-10's.

Be a man and use the least efficient aircraft you can.

If you can profit with a Concorde then you can profit with anything, anything less is for weak-willed men and cowards.
