If you mean the airlines with 5000+ planes - I think it is completely rational - I've run one with around 7,000 planes.

Then there are airlines that put ridiculous number of seats in a market - like 10,000+ seats a day between JFK-BOS (5x the daily demand) alone. I wonder how those airlines make money.
