After an AF A380 got one of its engines torn in midair recently, I'm starting to rethink if flying the ugly duckling of Airbus's widebody fleet is worth the patience...
no it isn't worth it.

Safety record is still very good. Just 2 incidents in 10 years is pretty good going I think. Not brilliant, but still very good. If you can get a seat near the front of the lower deck or any seat on the upper deck it is very much worth it. Probably worth seeking out, especially if travelling economy.

Well let's see. There were more than 2. QF engine, AF engine, and once there was a decompression incident because of leaky doors (IDK which airline) sooooo......

Both of them are nice, and I would choose based on the actual airline configuration. If I am choosing between A340 and 9-abrest 777, the 777 wins hands down. If the 777 is 10-abrest, I will have to look at other factors like the airline, the service, the fare, etc. But if you just want me to answer the question, then 777 wins in my opinion, but A340 is a good plane too, and the A346 looks pretty sexy. Other A340s, not so much.

777. The A340 looks a bit too lengthy from my liking. It has 4 engines which is both practical (we saw what happened to AF and one of their A380s) and beautiful but the 777 has two that are like 4 so...

ya. The 777 has more thrust from 2 engines than the 340-500 gets from 4. It also has better fuel econ

The day when SAA would finally retire their A340 guzzlers is something we can only dream of for now...ya. The 777 has more thrust from 2 engines than the 340-500 gets from 4. It also has better fuel econ
