Lease planes, fill high demand routes, and fly as frequently as possible when starting.

Do this, use efficient aircraft and an In-flight service standard that makes a small complimentary profit on you'll be on your way to success.
It is also worth noting routes around the 1,000nm mark tend to be the most profitable for an AE start up in my experience.
My 3,000th post on AE
Let's twerk for the occasion

Don't take multiple airplane families at the beginning, because initial maintenance cost can be crushing. That's the biggest mistake I made at the beginning.
Watch out carefully that you choose a really economical fleet until you get more rich, that is, stick to DC-9, 737, A320, ATR or something like that, wait until you have solid initial base until you get to profitable but expensive wide-body long-range stuff (747, A330), and forget about helicopters or Concorde.
I'd ignore some of advice above about cutting salaries, high frequency and avoiding big airports. Big airports can mean big money especially if you have no competition (yet), in the beginning you can earn a lot by getting prices up when demand is low, and I mean low on purpose because you avoid high frequency. Frequency will help you later to be more competitive and have higher route reputation, at the beginning there's not much use of it. And cutting salaries, I really don't know what that can achieve, salaries are a relatively small portion of your expense.

What's the name of your airline Luke.Stephens2393 and which world?
to make more profit you need to:
1-have one type of airplanes
2-Have short routes at the begining
3-don't have any free hours on the plane. benefit from every hour
4-decrease the number of employees and cut their salaries to 7$
5-Increase the price of the IFS ( it will decrease your reputation but you can improve it later)
6-increase the prices on some routes to increase the revenue. It's hard for all the routes especially if you have competition
Finally, if you want you can share control with me for couple hours and I will set the basic things I mentioned for you to start increasing your revenue. My airline is MEA and the rank is 4th and going in couple days to the third rank so I have experience

Wrong planes, or trying to compete on busy routes, besides this you should be making money.

If you have competition on the route, lower the price until it says 100% under the price.
