Having lived in Malaysia and NZ in my lifetime, I never got much opportunity to travel by rail (so I'm kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel with this post) The closest I've ever got to a long distance journey was the aforementioned Capital Connection (where the old apparently temporary locomotive juddered, crawled and sometimes just gave up and left us stationary in the night while the captain vainly tried to update us through the paper cup connected to a wire they called the PA system)

I'm kinda doubting if it was the ETR 610 as from my understanding those are only used on the Cisalpino services from Zurich HB - Milano Centrale (jointly operated by SBB-CFF-FFS and Trenitalia) because they have different traction motors in order to be able to support the Swiss, German and Italian electrification/signalling system, but who knows they might have swapped it in.

Would anyone know anything about the Munich (Germany) area rolling stock? A few years ago I was in Germany, I went on a few, especially from Memmingen (Munich West Airport, 2 hours from Munich) to the Hauptbahnhof ( main station). This was a loco with 80s carriages, typical German! I also travelled Munich- Salzburg on a double decker train, not ICE. No trace of either railcar on Wikipedia.

Sorry! Randallator, do you know the Mk3s in storage at Waterford in a siding? They're not being scrapped- The 'Orient Express' train company is buying them, converting them into sleeper coaches and running them around the coast. Dublin - Rosslare - Waterford - Charleville - Kerry - Galway - Dublin etc. It's not finalised but it should be done in 2015. AFAIK it goes to the North as well. I know someone with Irish Rail....

since when does being in waterford count as on the Rosslare to Dublin line? they aren't on it yet

i also know someone from the Model Railway Club in Wexford who works for Irish rail and i don't think anyone has heard a thing about it

hi in Holland the trains have a name

the 4000/4200 we call it the koploper (head walker)

the 2400/2600 we call it SLT (sprinter light train)

and the 8600 etc we call it v-irm  verlengd interregio materiaal (extended interregional material)
