Hubs, Terminals, and Gates

For some reason, early in my main game I closed my Hub and returned my unused gates and then began an expansion that was just leasing gates as I needed them. At first I thought I'd screwed up, but then I came across a post somewhere that said that that was the best thing to do early on.

Now I've leased out Indy and I'm looking into building a Terminal so I can continue expanding but I have a few questions.

Firstly, what are the benefits to a Hub? aside from the 25 gate limit as opposed to just 10. If Lease costs for a hub are twice the normal price, that alone seems to make a hub financially irresponsible.

Secondly, If i build a terminal with, say, 25 gates. Minus the 10 that will be filled right away, that leaves 15 unused gates. I would assume I have lease to them, but can I return them? and if so, are they available to only me, or do they go on the market to whomever wishes to lease them?

I'll probably have more once someone answers, but for now I'll leave it at this.

 Thanks!

Hubs bring connecting passengers through your airport which can be very important depending on your location. If you build a 25 gate terminal only you have access to those gates. Your gate leasing price also drops quite a lot.

So for a medium-ish airport like Indianapolis, reopening my Hub would be a good thing. As it would bring more passengers through.

If you don't mind the extra fees the yes.

Example, I'm based at CDG. Each gate is like 500000.

BUT, because I have  big terminal, I only pay like 214000 for each gate. You save a lot in economies of scale.

But remember, connecting passengers only pay 1/2 ticket price and it wouldn't fill all your plane fully.

Speak for yourself ;) . Many of my routes with some airlines are completely feasible IRL, but it on AE they have a fraction of the demand. So connecting pax really does make all the difference (and completely fills some planes) but at a lower profit.

Remember kids: Just because demand is 5Y doesn't mean that 200 a day flew the route IRL.

even though emirates does that they arent stupid in their route choices.

Of course not. It's not like I'm operating 200 daily flight from FLL to YLT airport. It need to be ATL-ORD or JFK-MIA. Only stupid people spam dead routes like those.

Although It's kind of funny how US domestic routes is ****ed. Even for spammers it's hard to make money now.

The US is easy enough if you use hubs and terminals, connecting pax are your friends.
