For short-medium haul I am split between the 737-900er and the A321.  IMO

What time period? In these times, get Dreamliner, B773ER or A333.

The 737ER is an inefficient plane. It has the same fuel flow as a B738 but over 40 less passengers (As a plane doing TATL will need more legroom than a B738 doing 500 miles). The A319LR is much better.

For your time period, consider the A300 and the B767 lines. You could also consider the DC-10/MD-11, but I don't know how well those will work out.

MD88/90 is good medium for the time. For long haul I'd go with a MD11

Looking at the time stamps on the world you're playing, B747-300 and A300-600R are the best one

Would the AN-72 be considered?

I think it is under short-haul category

sub 5000 miles: Airbus A319LR or neo variant for long thin routes, although I do LHR-JFK 62 times weekly with A319lr. Otherwise use Airbus A380 or A350/A330. For 1986, 763ERs will be good.
