Greetings,

My view:

There is NO WAY Boeing could get both Monarch and Icelandair to get the 737MAX

considering the flights they both do unless Boeing are offering something to these

operators that they are keeping a secret from the public...at the moment.

I reckon they'll announce something rather wonderful soon.

Who agrees?

Opinions?

Don't see what the problem is with Icelandair (and wasn't the deal over a year ago?). But it must've been a hell of deal for Monarch to make that switch..

Don't see what the problem is with Icelandair

The issue with icelandair are two;

  • How are the MAX going to cope with the very long legs that Icelandair flies
  • How are the MAX going to cope with adverse weather in Icelandair's route map

With Monarch, again the MAX simply cannot cope with the longer legs the A321 flies such as Banjul, Cape Verde, Egypt and further afield on charter.

then again, with Monarch, the deal is only for 30 aircraft and Monarch have 37 aircraft in their A320/A321 fleet with more on order...maybe signifying that this could be a split order, including some A321NEO for the longer legs as well as the smaller CSeries they hinted at.

Iceland is not a big market itself, so B737Max are their best choice for their B757-200 replacement, similar range, less passengers

As for monarch, it would be better if they stick with A320Neo since they would soon retired their B757, that would make them all airbus operator, so bringing B737Max would mean extra charge for maintenance and spare parts etc.

Which is exactly why I do not understand why they are introducing them

Icelandair usually does a bit of leasing, don't they? I think I heard somewhere some of them at least will just be leased away.

They used to leased B767 in the past if i'm not mistaken, some say they would probably replace their current B757 with B767 because the new B737Max range wasn't enough to fly to seattle and denver

Could we maybe see a leased Icelandair 787 rather than ageing 767?

Nah, demand between Keflavik are too small, even they would have problem filling up B767, it's iceland guys, a country where people think the land made out of ice

Well for Icelandair they already have orders for the 737-9MAX (correct me if I'm wrong) to replace the aging 757 fleet, which makes sense.

Now with Monarch I'm guessing Boeing gave them a better offer or waiting time than Airbus would. As for the maintenance side of things Monarch's maintenance do an awful lot of work on Boeings, here's the last few aircraft to enter the hangar at BHX:
G-POWD B767 Titan, ZZ337 A332 RAF, EI-LNA B787 Norweigan, G-POWH B752 Titan, G-POWD B763 Titan, EC-ISY B752 Privilege Club, G-ZBAL A321 Monarch, G-ZBAO A321 Monarch, ES-AEB E170 Estonian, G-ZBAJ A321 Monarch, G-ZBAR A320 Monarch, G-ZBAF A321 Monarch, G-ZBAI A321 Monarch, G-ZBAM A321 Monarch, G-ZBAK A321 Monarch, ES-AEB E170 Estonian.

So yeah, it does seem that Monarch would be more than able to cope switching to Boeing.

  But they are trying to position themselves as a hub between N. America & Europe aren't they? I read somewhere that the 737 MAXs would not replace the entire 757 fleet. Would see a logical mix of 737 MAXs replacing most 757 routes and some 757s left to service the longer routes.

B757 range also limited to some extent, so most cities in north america would be unreachable, they still have problem finding small plane with longer range, maybe A319LR or B737-700ER in the future for Icelandair?  :P

The reason they haven't ordered these already is that they are too small for Iceland air who need the larger aircraft as they operate lower frequencies.

Unless they're able to position themselves as the Emirates of Northern Europe, it seems like the 737 MAX is their best choice to replace the aging 757 fleet. Who knows maybe we'll see a row of 77Ws and A380s at KEF one day! :)

KEF is not nearly big enough for passenger A380 :P

I highly doubt we'll see scheduled service above a 767 to be honest and while the 737MAX may be a good replacement for the market in terms of aircraft size, I do believe it will limited Icelandair's route map possibilities somewhat.
