I use 777-300ERs and 747-8s instead because I prefer more realistic fleets. If I did have A380s, the number of routes that could support them with decent frequency and by decent frequency I mean at least 7 weekly flights, would be way less than the number of routes that could support 747s and 777s. I find 300-400 seats on 747s and 777s better than 500 on an A380.
The point you make is exactly the reason why I don't have huge A380 fleets either, but I find them to be quite good for a) 747 replacement and routes that do support a daily or more A380 (~ 500 seats). For example I recently had a big airline based in Istanbul with a big fleet of 777-300 (W & non-W), yet I found a place for the A380 on trunk routes to the US, India and the ME, and to the far east.
