I am a small airline due to mistakes in beginning of game. But am wondering when I should start buying jet powered planes and changing some of my longer routes to them.  They have just come avail. in R1.  Answers for realism and succeeding in AE would be appreciated.

Sir
You must keep to 1 or two aircraft to keep Mantince. cost down

You should operate your aircraft until they have no hours of avabilty

You should modernize when a new model aircraft comes out and then replace with a model
That keeps up fleet age rating

Operating your aircraft until they have zero hours left to use isn't exactly "realistic", in fact I've kept an airline going along with aircraft being used like 8 hours a day.

Basically, I've found planes to be in perfectly working order for 30+ years, but I personally wouldn't keep props and such around for that long. Basically, my plan is to replace everything I have in R1 with jets (707s, DC-8s, 727s, etc) throughout the sixties. If you do that you should be fine.

Don't worry about being "realistic". You can't be really successful if you use an aircraft 8 hours a day. If your all about reputation, then replace aircraft when they are 15-20 years old, but you can keep them longer. Just be aware that the older the aircraft, the higher the maintenance cost is. To succeed, you need to find good routes with little to none competition and eventually make your way up the the big cities.
