Aerolineas Argentinas
ARGENTINA - LV
ICAO CODE: ARG 044
CALLSIGN: Argentina
Aerolineas Argentinas is the national state airline of Argentina, created in 1949 with a forced amalgamation of all the civilian Argentinian airlines into a unified national airline. The airline that were involved were...
Aeroposta Argentina was formed in 1928 operating mail and passenger services between Bahia Blanca and the oil-rich Comodoro Rivadavia. An international route to Paraguay began the following year using French-made Latecoere 25 flying boats. Aeroposta was the only Argentinian airline during the 1930s.
Corporacion was formed in 1939 with Italian finance but in 1945 it was bought by Sr. Dodero and renamed Compania Argentina de Aeronavegacion Dodero. It was renamed ALFA in 1946.
ALFA - Aviacion del Litoral Fluvial - formed in May 1946 having been previously known asCorporacion. Starting with a fleet of DC-3 Dakotas it was bought by Sr. Dodero who then ordered Short Sandringham flying boats from Britain and was the first post-war foreign airline to place an order for a British airliner.
FAMA - Flota Aerea Mercante Argentina - founded 8 February 1946 as a part-state owned national carrier for long-haul services to Europe using DC-4 aircraft beginning with a service to London (in association with B.S.A.A.) on 17 December 1946. Rome and Madrid services quickly followed. Fleet included DC-4s, DC-6s, Avro Lancastrians, Avro Yorks and Vikings.
Zonda - Zonas Oeste y Norte de Aerolineas Argentinas -founded 23 February 1946 operating services between Buenos Aires and Salta using a DC-3. Convari 240 twins were soon in operation.
The Argentinan Air Force operated 'airline' LADE - Lineas Aereas del Estado - was a merger of LASO Lineas Aereas Suroeste, and LANE - Lineas Aereas Nor-Este, LADE was the only airline that did not take part in the merger which formed Aerolineas Argentinas. LADE operated holiday flights from Buenos Aires to the Andes-resort at Bariloche during the war years and beyond.
AEROLINEAS ARGENTINAS
Thus Aerolineas Argentinas began with a varied fleet of airliners, facilities and staff.
Domestic services were begun using the mixed fleet of Convair 240s, Douglas C-47 Dakotas and Vickers Vikings but the modern Convair 240s were the mainstay domestic fleet type at this time.
The Sandringham flying boats were not taken into the new fleet.
Longer routes were flown with Douglas DC-4, DC-6, Avro Lancastrians. The airline's first international service was with a DC-6 to New York in may 1950, a 21-hour flight.
After a difficult five years with low passenger loads the airline was given greater autonomy in 1955 just at a time when the law changed to allow private airline operators back into business in Argentina.
The first competitor was Transcontinental (T.S.A.) operating domestic schedules with a fleet of Curtiss C-46 Commando twins. They would compete directly with Aerolinas Argentinas on routes to the USA. Further competitors followed but Aerolinas Argentinas was already looking to the future of travel - the jet.
The jet age began in 1959 with the introduction of De Havilland Comet 4 long-haul jetliners. Aerolinas Argentinas was the first jet operator on the south Atlantic when it operated a Comet service on 19 May 1959. The new Comet 4 jetliners were also used to destinationsl in Europe - including London - and to New York.
In 1962 the airline became the launch-customer for Britain's new twin turboprop airliner - the Avro 748. This would be a replacement for the aging Convair 240 fleet. Its first service was on 2 April 1962 between Buenos Aires and Bahia Blanca.
In 1966 Boeing 707 intercontinental jets were introduced for the airline's long-haul routes. The 707s relegated the aging Comets to regional international routes until they were withdrawn from use in the early 1970s.
From 1968 the airline operated another twin turboprop type... the Japanese-made NAMC YS-11A.
Boeing 727-200 jets were introduced in the late 1960s as the airline re-equipped its regional and domestic fleet with jets.
