basically being in an alliance gives you more connecting pax through your hubs from other member airlines, but overall being in alliance is hardly beneficial at all.

You also get a small increase in your overall airline reputation by the total number of routes operated in the alliance.

More importantly being in an alliance means
- helpful advice
- a more social game
- co-ordinated action against difficult rivals

That's assuming you're not one of the big 3 - One World, Star Alliance or Sky Team .... There's also a fourth one rising from the depths of hell - 'avion'.

You know, being part of the 'Big 4' isn't considered a good thing

Not entirely. Since many members join them, not knowing any better, they are a great way to get an increase in connecting PAX and reputation. You won't get any of the 3 points Mobeer brought up though.
