So you want to plan a bus system, right? (Yes) Good, let me show you how. For the example below we will use Appleton, WI as our city, like in the Virtubus Teaser thread.
First, you will need a map of the region you will serve. This map should work:
Step two is to find the main destinations, or where the passengers would like to go. Circle the CBD/Downtown(s), Malls, Walmarts, etc. Your map should look like this:
Step three is to look for Chokepoints, or places where traffic is likely to be slow. Rivers make great Chokepoints, because it is expensive to build bridges. Subsequently, few bridges exist across rivers in a region. Your map should now look like this:
The last step for today is to roughly sketch out how your routes will look. You don't have to be precise; just connect main destinations to each other and be mindful of chokepoints. Your map should now look like this:
If you made it this far, Congratulations!! You are now on your way to becoming a bus planner. In later tutorials we will cover detailed routing, scheduling, and other fun stuff. Give yourself a pat on the back, and happy planning.
