Are you using the newest version of GIMP? It doesn't look like it to me.

No that's an older version of GIMP, the latest one is 2.8, which is far better.

I hope you guys don't mind but i have an alternative method to shade, so here goes my method:
(This method is best for templates which have separate layers for the body, details and the wing, just apply this method onto the body layer before adding in the details and etc)
For this tutorial, I'm going to shade the turquoise circle as an example.
1. Create a new layer on top of your livery (my circle), make sure it is transparent.

2.Pick a colour close to the livery's colour and paint it on the transparent layer using the pen tool. (i.e. Pick a lighter colour for the brighter areas and vice versa)
After that, select "Filters">"Blur">"Gaussian Blur". Make sure the transparent layer is selected at this stage.

3. The "Gaussian Blur" menu should show up along with a preview. Adjust the "Blur Radius" as required. ("Blur Method" should be "RLE")

4. Click OK. This is what it looks like. If you are satisfied, merge your current (transparent) layer down. Repeat step 1-3 several times to cover other areas.

5. This is what my circle looks like after a few times of repeating step 1-3.
Notice the extra blurred area outside of the circle. It can be removed by using the "Fuzzy Select Tool" (Hot key: U).

This is my final product:

I hope you find this tutorial useful. ^_^

Not quite a tutorial, but thought it could be of educational use.

This is my 787 template, with every layer turned off except the shading layers, and the masks have been removed so you can see every stroke and shade and image that went into making my 787 look the way it does:

I got stuck at Step 3

I'm confused about the red text that says "Always only place decorations that need different layers in between the body and the details" How do I do that, I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to GIMP so please excuse me if this seems like a stupid question. I tried to see if there were any different layers on the template but couldn't find it. Also if anyone have a Beechcraft 1900C and/or Fairchild Metroliner template that would be amazing :)

Having the same issue here - is there a possibility that either the original author, or another AEer who's experienced in GIMP, can provide an updated tutorial?
