airWest was founded in 2018, commencing operations out of Phoenix, Arizona, in 2021 with Airbus A319's purchased from Alden Air Lines. The airline placed orders for brand-new Airbus A220's the same year. Lawsuits quickly followed from Alden, SunWest, and Beeline over the airline's branding and business model, with SunWest and Alden (owner of Grand West's IP) arguing that the name infringed upon their own branding, while Beeline argued that the livery too closely resembled its own. SunWest additionally argued that its business model was copied directly from itself, though this claim was later dropped. Alden's case was thrown out, but airWest was forced to settle for an undisclosed amount to SunWest and Beeline. Despite this, the airline grew, acquiring A320's and placing orders for A320neo and A321neo aircraft to further expand its operation.

As Spirit Airlines downsized, its collapse imminent, a new airline was incorporated using the Hughes Airwest IP purchased from Delta Air Lines. It launched in January of 2026 as airWest, using Airbus A319's and A320's based out of Phoenix, Arizona. It placed orders for new Airbus A220-300 aircraft the following month. On May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines ceased all operations, flooding the market with relatively young A320's. airWest quickly took over many of Spirit's leases and slots, adding A320neo and A321neo aircraft to its fleet. As of August of 2026, the airline continues to expand its services at an explosive rate.
