2017 - Present A32N

2017 - Present A32N

Himmelbahn was very proud of its modern livery. They viewed the new livery as a branding triumph as a simplistic but sleek update of its brand identity. Keen historians may notice that press releases lauded the 2005 livery with almost exactly the same language. Another similarity to the reveal of the 2005 livery was that the brand reveal included a special UnitedWings variant. One might have thought that Himmelbahn's brand identity team might have recalled the lesson of 2005, but those people were proven to be overly optimistic. With its new livery came a rush to design special liveries and a way to commemorate Himmelbahn's commitment to UnitedWings. This became the Einheit (Unity) project and a special iteration of the new Himmelbahn livery that incorporated many alliance branding elements. As this was to be a surprise to UnitedWings and the general public, Project Einheit was kept under tight wraps. Eventually, the team decided that a new European flagship Airbus A321neo was the ideal aircraft to sport the new livery.
In the year 2019, the fruits of Project Einheit became public as the neo rolled out of a hangar in Munich to rapturous applause. Immediately, phones in the executive ladder at Himmelbahn began to ring with concerned calls from other sides of the airline's design team who had never seen the Einheit special before and UnitedWings executives. Both had a similar concern which was that the livery was heinous - an atrocity to the eyes and to the brand identity of UnitedWings. Executives explained that the special livery was meant as a surprise gift to show their dedication to and care for their chosen airline trade group. This response was not sufficient to placate the aestethic concerns of UnitedWings management. After exactly two weeks service time, Einheit, D-ABFF, returned to the Himmelbahn paint shop in Munich and its livery was altered. Perhaps not willing to spend more on painting over what they still considered to be a good deed gone underappreciated or perhaps simply sour that their gift was poorly received, executives and the Project Einheit team had the aircraft stickered over to remove all non-standard explicit UnitedWings branding to produce a special (?) livery pictured below. D-ABFF has not been repainted since and continues to operate largely out of the Berlin base wearing this unique and recognizable scheme.
