Air Turkey 777-200

Air Turkey were one of a few airlines that helped Boeing design the 777. They were the 3rd airline to order the plane, too, first ordering 16 airplanes on 22 of June 1991. They ordered 6 777-200s and 10 777-200ERs, both equipped with the Rolls Royce engines.

The first one rolled out of the factory wearing Air Turkey colours on 22 September 1995. This aircraft was registered TC-SUA, a 777-200, with the delivery flight taking place on 6 October that same year, flying from Everett to Istanbul with a quick fuel stop in Newark. Newark was chosen as the fuel stop because Air Turkey announced on 15 August 1995 that Istanbul-Newark would be one of the first routes the 777-200ER operated, and the first time Air Turkey flew to Newark at all commercially (except for a few diversions from JFK airport). It was done more so for publicity and to hype up the new route than an essential fuel stop (although they would have to fuel up somewhere anyway, probably Western Europe) as the range for the non-ER 777-200 was too short to fly nonstop Everett-Istanbul).

The first commercial flight for the Air Turkey 777-200 took place on 10 October 1995, flying from Istanbul to Hong Kong as TY0301.

The first 777-200ER, TC-SUB (pictured above) rolled out of Everett on 15 October 1995, and flew Everett to Istanbul nonstop just 6 days later on 21 October. The first commercial flight for the 777-200ER took place on 30 October 1995 from Istanbul-Newark as TY0029.

The 777-200s were retired earlier than planned in 2020 thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2 of the 10 777-200ERs have also been taken out of service, with the first one being pulled from service in 2018. But, these 2 planes have been/are being converted into freighters for Air Turkey Cargo. The 777-200ER will be retired by 2025. They will/ are being replaced with A350s, 787-10s and later on the 777X.
