Vanguard Airlines 747-8i "2013-"

In 2007, with a large fleet of aging 747-400s, Vanguard Airlines opted for the next generation of the 4-engined "Queen of the Skies", the -8I, or Intercontinental. Compared to the 747-400, the -8I is 30% quieter, 16% more fuel-efficient, and has 13% lower seat-mile costs with nearly the same cost per trip. Additionally, the 747-8i is the world's fastest commercial jet by a wide margin.

Vanguard signed a memorandum for 27 747-8is, and an option for an additional 10. Deliveries began in 2012, and the last airframe was delivered in January 2017. The option for 10 additional airframes was altered for Boeing 787-10s in 2018. The 747-8i serves principal long-haul routes from the airlines' hubs in San Francisco, Houston, Newark, Memphis, Washington and Detroit as well as Transcontinental-US and inter-hub routes. The diverse capability of the 747-8i was one of the main selling points over aircraft such as the 777-300ER and Airbus A340-600. These airframes took over for the 747-400 which was retired in 2020 after 32 years of service.
