As Kazakh Airlines began to expand its network at the end of the 90's beginning of the '00s and the retirement of both IL-96 aircraft from the fleet the airline looked towards sufficient replacements, with the arrival of both the Boeing 757 & 767 Kazakh was committed to continuing with a Boeing fleet, much debate came with the Boeing 747 with it being such a large aircraft and Kazakhstan still a developing nation however the airline needed the range and thus the decision for them was to purchase the Boeing 747-400M (Combi). The 747-400M provided a reduced capacity in the cabin making it easier to fill seats and also provided the cargo capacity to export the countries abundance of natural resources, alongside this came the range, with the airlines busiest and farthest long haul route being New York due to the United States large diaspora of Kazakh's located in the New York and Pennsylvania areas, the aircraft gave Kazakh Airlines the capabilities to operate the route non-stop whereas previously the route had been operated via Kiev and Minsk to capture not only the Eastern European - United States market but also to refuel in order to be able to operate the route, while the Almaty-Kiev-New York route still continued operated by the airlines new Boeing 767's, the route via Minsk was dropped in favor of the new non-stop service, later the Almaty-Kiev-New York route would also be dropped from the airlines network as Ukraine's national airline began services to New York on their own equipment making it harder to compete in that market.

The additional cargo capacity not only allowed Kazakh Airlines to export goods, but it also allowed them to import products to the country, and with no dedicated cargo airline to provide these quick and vital links to countries of which Kazakhstan both imported and exported goods made it hard and the 747-400M was the solution. Primarily operating on the New York route, the 747 also operated to Beijing, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia, and also played a vital role in operating flights for the Hajj pilgrimage, with a large majority of Kazakhstan being Islamic the 747 was often used to operate the pilgrimage charter flights to Saudi Arabia.

A total of 3 Boeing 747-400M's operated for Kazakh Airlines with the first example introduced in August of 2000, all three types would be removed from service with the airline in 2008 and be converted to full cargo aircraft when Kazakh Airlines opened its Cargo division, the type would be replaced by a more economic option on the airline's core routes.
