Kazakh Airlines
In 1994 Kazakh Airlines launched not only the nations but the regions first ever service to New York city, operating the flight from Akmola (now named Nur Sultan or Astana) the capital of Kazakhstan to New York via Kiev on their new Ilyushin IL-96 aircraft. While Kazakh Airlines initial launch of the service was operated via Kiev this would change the following year when Kazakh Airlines opened a non-stop service however they would still retain a twice weekly service via Kiev.
The launch of the new route was huge for the country and a big step in the building of relationships with the western world, opening this market opened Kazakh Airlines to the world, and not only this but at the time it was being operated by the soviet's first, newest and only long haul widebody airliner the Ilyushin IL-96 of which Kazakh Airlines used as part of its marketing campaign. The posters shown where part of a campaign to promote the Kazakh Airlines as central Asia's local airline as well as promote the companies new routes to New York City.
Very nice!
