Wright Airways | 2008-present | Boeing 737 MAX 8

As its fleet of MD-90s and remaining MD-80s started showing their age in the mid-2010s, Wright Airways began looking for a successor aircraft. The airline considered various options before settling on the Boeing 737 MAX, and placed an order for 50 examples of the MAX 8 in 2016. In early 2018, the airline took delivery of its first MAX and celebrated the occasion by unveiling a new livery. Unfortunately, the worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX occurred only a year after the airline had begun operating the type, which delayed Wright's fleet renewal plan and forced the airline to cancel some flights. Once the grounding order was lifted and all pilots certified to fly the MAX had received additional training, the airline reintroduced the aircraft and quickly retired the MD-80 fleet. However, in light of the rapid rebound in US domestic air travel, Wright is planning to continue operating the MD-90 and the smaller Boeing 717 until sometime in 2025.
