During the 1980s and 1990s, Wright Airways was looking for new aircraft to replace its narrowbody fleet of ageing DC-9s. The airline naturally chose the MD-80 family of aircraft due to its commonality with the DC-9 and later on placed orders for the MD-90 and MD-95 as well. Unfortunately, Boeing's acquisition of McDonnell Douglas led to the end of the MD-90 program, and after taking delivery of its last example Wright began considering other aircraft types to fill the 150-seat category. However, Boeing chose to continue with the MD-95 program and renamed the type as the Boeing 717, so Wright's management decided to make it the backbone of the carrier's short-haul fleet. The airline took delivery of its last 717 in 2006 and has plans to operate the type until at least 2025.
