Italiaggio MD-11 1990-2002

Italiaggio MD-11 1990-2002

As Italiaggio planed for to exit the 80s, the plan was an extensive overhaul of the fleet introducing more fuel efficient aircraft. Replacing the flagship Tristars was at the top of the agenda, with the 767, MD-11, and A330/40 all in contention. The 767 was ruled out quite quickly by conservative management that was leery about then brand new ETOPs extensions allowing the type to cover key transatlantic routes. This left the A340 and MD-11 but the MD-11 was projected to be the more fuel efficent of the two and Douglass offered the Italian carrier a deal Airbus couldn't beat. Thus, Italiaggio became the launch European costumer of the type and ended up with 5 all passenger MD-11s and would eventually supplement that with an order for 5 Combis in the early 90s. 1990 saw a tweaked version of the Italiaggio livery which axed the flag lines on the forward fuselage and a more prominent deployment of the tail design. When the livery was introduced, most of the fleet hadn't been repainted in the '88 livery yet but due to the similarity between the two liveries, aircraft already in the '88 livery were not repainted until both liveries were retired in 2002.

    Nice

uhm what happened to the engine?

uhm what happened to the engine?

Yeah, that's definitely not an MD-11 engine.

Wtf is with that engine my god

uhm what happened to the engine?

It features the Trent 600 which Rolls Royce thought about making but then gave up - in the world with a more successful MD-11 program, I imagine they would have finished the development to offer the engine

The Trent 600 development was stopped because its two main customers - British Caledonian and Air Europe - stopped flying.

But nonetheless, that's actually kinda cool.

Kinda looks disproportionally large. Like GE90 on a trijet

    Oh I see, interesting!

I thought it would be pretty cool looking just to make them unique

Nice but wouldn't the tail engine pod have to be larger as well to fit the Trent 600?
